It develops with us throughout our lives and is influenced by our genes, diet, and environment. When the different species in the gut microbiome no longer work together symbiotically, an imbalance called dysbiosis develops. This means that pathogenic microbes grow in larger numbers than the "good" microbes. Dysbiosis is associated with gut conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases, and with other conditions such as obesity, metabolic disorders, heart disease, allergies, and asthma.

The Dysbiosis organic acid screening for yeasts and bacteria measures the amount of certain organic acids from the first urine voided in the morning. These acids are produced by microorganisms in our gut and consist of toxic breakdown products, the organic acids, which are excreted via the kidneys (see Table 1). The organic acids investigated are: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, benzoic acid, dihydroxy-phenylpropionic acid, hippuric acid, tricarballylic acid, tartaric acid, citramalic acid, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, m-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, p-cresol, indican and d-arabinitol.

Figure 1: Possible overgrowth and their metabolites (organic acids)
